The Arcana of Freemasonry.

The Arcana of Freemasonry.

London: George Allen & Unwin Ltd., 1915. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. xvi + 326pp + 10pp of adverts at rear. Original brick-red cloth, black-stamped title, etc. to spine and front board, b&w frontis and illustrations. A collection of essays on early Masonic history by Albert Churchward (1852–1925). Churchward was a great believer in the occult wisdom and Eyptian origins of Freemasonry, which he explores in this series of essays, many of which are revised versions of pieces that appeared in "The Freemason." He is best known for another related work, "The Signs and Symbols of Primordial Man, being an explanation of the Evolution of Religious Doctrines from the Eschatology of the Ancient Egyptians." His works were influential in occult as well as Masonic circles, with Kenneth Grant drawing from them in several of his books. Cloth a little rubbed and unevenly marked and darkened (as common), edges and spine ends bumped and a bit chafed. Page edges a bit darkened, endpapers unevenly browned, bookshop ink stamp on front pastedown, pencilled notes on rear pastedown. Some darkening and grubby blotches to pages, most noticably in the first half-dozen leaves. A little fraying to the edges of the plates, one of which has a short tear and a dark band across the bottom margin (almost certainly a printer's tear). Obviously used, but still a solid G+ copy of the uncommon first edition. (No dust jacket.). Item #67879
