The first English language edition of this study of "Hieroglyphica," the fourth century C.E. work in which Horapollo Nillacus collected together nearly two hundred allegorical symbols which he said formed the basis of the ancient Egyptian hieroglphics. In this analysis of the work "Boas discusses all four layers of meaning implicit in the hieroglyphs: literal, figurative, allegorical and analogical age.... and traces the influences which, in the 16th century, caused the rebirth of interest in symbolism - the first and greatest being Platonism."
