Madras: The Theosophical Publishing House, 1890 - 1891. First Edition. Hardcover. Large thick octavo. A complete year, twelve issues with index and supplements bound in. Modern beige cloth with printed paper spine label. Issues are consecutively paginated, this volume contains iv + 768pp + 110 pages supplements at rear. The journal was originally founded in 1879 by H. P. Blavatsky along with H.S. Olcott. At the time, Blavatsky called The Theosophist: "The largest international illustrated Theosophical Monthly" and it most likely was. Blavatsky initially took the role of editor which she later passed to H.S Olcott and subsequently to Annie Besant. Each issue contains a collection of interesting essays, relevant lectures, notices, book reviews etc by various members of the Theosophical Society. This volume includes as the front cover of the June, 1891 issue, the notice of Blavatsky's death on May 8, 1891 and of course there are numerous pieces about her in the following issues. It also includes a (complete) 5 part series on Obeah, a short essay on "the Vampire" by Olcott, and a contribution by F. A. Brodie-Innes, wife of prominent Golden Dawn member J. W. Brodie-Innes, and herself Cancellarius of Amen-Ra Temple.
