Item #68162 King's Cross Calling. Rosaleen: related works NORTON, H. C. BREWSTER, Virginia Luther.

King's Cross Calling.

Sydney: (H. C. Brewster, by Mastercraft Printing and Publishing), [1945]. First Edition. Softcover. Octavo (8 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches). 128pp. Colour illustrated wrappers with design by Rosaleen Norton, b&w illustrations. A guide to the then-Bohemian Sydney suburb of Kings Cross, produced in the closing year of the war to sell to servicemen on leave in the city. It featured memorable cover art by the-then all but unkown Rosaleen Norton, which incorporated a self-portrait of the artist as “the Girl of the Cross.” Norton was also the subject of a paragraph in a chapter on "The Artistic Element," which described the artist in her room, drawing, late at night "before a furniture-fed fire, cross legged on the floor." From the library of Aleister Crowley scholar Martin P. Starr with a "post it note" printed with Starr's name loosely inserted for use as a book mark. Covers darkened with a few light creases, chip from upper top corner, corners a little chipped, some tears to the edges. Cheap wartime paper browned - as always. Still, overall a tight, unmarked VG copy of an uncommon work. Item #68162
