The Magician of the Golden Dawn: the Story of Aleister Crowley.

Chicago, IL: Contemporary Books, 1978. First Softcover Edition. Softcover. Large octavo. xvi + 338pp. Index, biblio & glossary. A "reconstruction" of the life of Aleister Crowley (rather disconcertingly it includes invented dialogue) with a highly complimentary Foreword by Israel Regardie. This copy previously owned by Crowley scholar, Martin P. Starr. A lengthy note in his handwriting on the inside front cover dated 1979ev indicates that it was given to him as a Christmas present that year, when he was just 20 years old. The youthful scholar was clearly not impressed with the book itself - in the longish note he bemoans the lack of referencing and bibliographical substance, and goes on to make a few further rather acid comments in the margins of Regardie's Forward and the author's Preface. In later life Starr established himself as a serious Crowley scholar: an essayist, author of "The Unknown God", editor of Crowley texts, and co-founder of the Teitan Press. The book itself is a "well-read" copy with moderate overall shelfwear to covers and rubbing to edges, a tidy tape reinforcement to spine , page edges darkened and thumbed. Still a solid serviceable Good copy with an interesting history. Item #68173
