The Books of the Beast. Essays on Aleister Crowley, Montague Summers, Francis Barrett and others.

London: Mandrake, 1991. Second edition, Revised and enlarged. Softcover. Octavo. 128pp. B&w frontispiece and illustrations, notes and index. This copy warmly INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author to Crowley scholar, Martin P. Starr on half title page. The Second revised and enlarged Edition of this delightful collection of bibliographically orientated essays. The book is worth having for the essay on Crowley alone, but each of the other essays is similarly entertaining and instructive, and the author's little autobiographical Epilogue an absolute treasure. Martin P. Starr is well known in Crowley circles as the author of "The Unknown God", an essayist, editor of Crowley texts, and co-founder of the Teitan Press. With one of Starr's personalised "post it notes", with his name printed on it, loosely inserted for use as a book mark. Light overall shelf-wear, cover edges a bit chafed, vertical crease on front cover at spine. Despite a bit of use, a tight, clean VG copy with a delightful provenance. Item #68177
