The second edition of a work first published in 1941. The author, Rupert Seeley Gleadow (1909 - 1974) was a Cambridge educated British lawyer and author, with an interest in astrology - he wrote "The Astrology of Everyday Life" (1940) and "Origin of the Zodiac" (1969) - and the psychology of magic. In this work he seeks to make a rational investigation of the practices of magic and divination, which he sees as a "natural human preoccupation," and "the psychological attitude of the men who practised it, and the success which they achieved. In so doing he draws from a wide variety of sources: from original documents, to studies of the lives of well known magicians from Apollonius to Agrippa and Paracelsus.
