Octavo. xxii + 158pp, ivpp. Full "honey coloured" sheepskin leather embossed and titled in blind on upper board and spine, raised bands, marbled endpages & b&w illustrations and sigils. According to the publisher: Paper stock resembling the rough papers of the 17th century was used and the pages are hand sewn on a traditional bookbinder's wooden frame, marbled endpapers from an archival stock - the front endpaper includes a facsimile the bookplate of Sir Francis Dashwood Baron le Despencer and there is a penned inscription by the binder on the first blank. Edition limited to 40 copies of which the first 7 were bound thus and made available to friends of the publisher (the 33 remaining copies were bound in half kid-skin). Each of the seven copies thus are designated by a planetary astrological symbol, this copy by the "spirit and tincture" of the Sun. A facsimile printing of the First English edition of Paracelsus' The Archidoxes of Magic. Of the Supreme Mysteries of Nature.: translated by Robert Turner and published in 1656. Paracelsus (Phillipus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim: 1493 - 1541) was one of the first of the European alchemical writers to underline the link between chemical experiment and spiritual development, and is renowned both as a precursor of modern scientific medicine and chemistry, and in alchemical circles. His work is said to have had a profound effect on Dr. Dee and Francis Barrett, and through their writings, on the membership of the Golden Dawn and kindred occult groups and individuals.
