Large octavo. xvi + 220pp. Publisher's brown cloth gilt-lettered on spine, lettered in blind on front board, index, b&w frontis & illustrations. From the Knopf "History of Civilization" series, this is the first American edition of this study of the origin and spread of certain major symbols, notably the swastika, the spiral, the ear, and the tree. The author, Donald Alexander Mackenzie (1873 – 1936) was a Scottish author and folklorist who wrote numerous books on mythology and religion. Just a bit of light shelf wear, bruising to spine ends, page edges darkened, owner's name on front blank, book shop label on rear pastedown. Otherwise a tight, clean VG+ copy in a Good example of the scarce dust jacket. (Dust jacket darkened at spine, chafing & chipping to all edges and extremities, a few half inch chips at edges, archival tape repairs to splits at rear. Not clipped. Now in protective mylar cover).
