The Physical Phenomena of Spiritualism: Fraudulent and Genuine, Being a Brief Account of the Most Important Historical Phenomena; A Criticism of Their Evidential Value, and a Complete Exposition of the Methods Employed in Fraudulently Reproducing the Same.

Boston: Herbert B. Turner & Co., 1907. First Edition. Hardcover. Large octavo. xiv + 426pp. Original cloth lettered gilt on spine & boards. B/w plates, index, top edge gilt. A study of slate-writing, rope-tying, table-turning, levitation, spirit-photography, etc. The work is divided into two sections 'Fraudulent' and 'Genuine,' with the author "anxious to expose the fraud connected with the subject - since it is only by so doing that we can ever hope to reach the genuine phenomena which are to be studied." Light shelf wear, spine ends and corners lightly chafed and frayed, endpapers split slightly at gutters - but hinges tight. Erasure marks to front blank, pages toned. A loosely inserted newsclipping ("A Last Word on Palladino" by Hereward Carrington) has caused heavy offset browning to pp 122 & 123, a couple of marginal chips/tears caused by careless opening . Overall a tight, about VG copy of the scarce First Edition. (no dust jacket). Item #68828
