Occult Science in Medicine.

London: Theosophical Publishing Society, 1893. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. 100pp + ivpp. adverts. Original deep green cloth with gilt title, etc. to spine and upper board, blind rules. A study of the occult aspects of medicine by Franz Hartmann (1838 - 1912), a Bavarian-American physician and occultist. After an initial interest in Spiritualism Hartmann joined the Theosophical society in 1882, traveling to Adyar, and supposedly receiving personal letters from the Mahatmas. At some stage after returning to Europe he met Theodor Reuss, who helped found a German branch of the fringe-Masonic Rites of Memphis and Mizraim. Hartmann held high position in this and other of Reuss's orders, and when these merged under the auspices of Carl Kellner's Ordo Templi Orientis, Hartmann was named "Honorary Grand Master of the Sovereign Sanctuary" of that order. Hartmann was one of the best known authors on magic of his time, and authored or edited nearly a dozen works on the occult. Cloth a little rubbed and with a few faint marks and some discoloration to boards, spine ends and corners lightly bumped and chafed, small private library label at lower spine, page edges and endpapers unevenly browned, a few short tears to upper margins of last leaves, pages toned with scattered foxing, small ink stamped owner's name on front and rear endpapers, bookshop label front pastedown. Overall a tight VG copy (no dust jacket). Quite scarce. Item #68833
