Rich in folklore and folk traditions, the West Country has always had an aura of mystery and magic, and this is reflected in its past and the various races and their spiritual beliefs who have occupied it down the centuries. The author, London-born Michael Howard (1948–2015), was active in British occult circles from his late teens onwards, and was a member of various occult groups including the Cultus Sabbati. He was a prolific author on Witchcraft and other esoteric subjects, and from 1976 until his death was the editor of the well-known British journal of traditional witchcraft, magic and neo-Paganism, "The Cauldron."
