San Francisco: The Hermetic Publishing Co., 1916. First Edition. Hardcover. Large octavo, 114pp + iiipp publisher's adverts + xpp blank pages at rear. Original brown cloth with black borders, titling and eagle device to upper board, distributed by Sterling Publishing Co., Chicago. From the author: "The text of the Hermetic Sermons on 'An Introduction to the Gnosis of the Nature of Things' and the Sacred Sermon, together with the Esoteric Commentary, giving in full, the Esoteric Key to these two great sermons. The official interpretation of the Hermetic Brotherhood of Atlantis." The text comprises a set of ten "private" lessons intended to be given only to the student whose name was written by Raleigh on a printed "presentation page" which immediately follows the copyright page. In this instance there is no name or date on that page which warns: "For the individual use of....(Name)... In evidence whereof it is strictly understood these private lessons must not be loaned as they come to you fully magnetised, and the magnetism MUST remain intact." Contents are: An Introduction to the Gnosis of All Things, Part I: Text, Lesson I - The Nature of All Motion, Lesson II - The Nature of Space, Lesson III - The Mover, Lesson IV - The Bodiless, Lesson V - The Divine Essence, Lesson VI - The Essence of God. Part 2: The Sacred Sermon of Hermes: Text, Lesson VIII - God, Godhead, Godly Nature, Lesson IX - The Birth of the Cyclic Gods, Lesson X - The Work of the Cyclic Gods. Cloth lightly shelf worn and with a few darker areas from use, spine darkened and spine ends & corners bumped and a little rubbed. Page edges a bit darkened, owner's name in pencil on front blank, pages a bit toned and with a few very faint finger marks - but otherwise unmarked. Overall a tight, clean VG copy of this scarce First edition. Item #69002
