The Way of a Pilgrim, and the Pilgrim Continues His Way.

New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, ND [ 1952 ]. Combined Edition. Hardcover. Small octavo. x + 246pp. Quarter red cloth w/ blue papered boards, white title, etc. to spine. A combined edition of "The Way of a Pilgrim," and its sequel "The Pilgrim Continues His Way" being English translations of two 19th-century Russian works in which the narrator recounts his travels through the Ukraine, Russia, and Siberia as a mendicant pilgrim who was taken to heart the injunction of Paul (I Thessalonians 5:17) to "pray without ceasing." He visits various monasteries and Holy men along the way, and is taught the Jesus prayer, which he repeats in mantra-like fashion in order to achieve communion with God. The author of the works is unknown, and it is not known if the accounts are meant to be literally true, or whether they might be compiled from a shared experience. The translator of this work, the Russian-based Anglican clergyman Reginald Michael French (1884- 1969 ) had no doubt about their veracity, however, writing of the author that "everyone will appreciate the sincerity of his conviction and few probably will doubt the reality of his experience." Very light overall shelfwear, a bit of bruising and chafing to corners and spine ends, top edge darkened, pages lightly toned but clean and unmarked. A tight, bright VG+ copy in Good dust jacket (Dust jacket worn chafed and chipped at all edges and extremities, spine darkened, price clipped. Now in mylar cover). Item #69032
