Original green cloth with gilt title and author to spine, bibliographical notes. The first edition of Mead's study of Apollonius of Tyana, the first century (CE) Pythagorean philosopher and teacher. George Robert Stowe Mead (1863 - 1933), an English historian and writer who was a prominent member of the Theosophical Society, as well as the founder of the Quest Society. Mead's writings dealt mainly with the Gnostic religion and the Hermetica and and he is undoubtedly best known for his "Thrice Greatest Hermes", a landmark translation and collection of Trismegistic Literature still important today. Cloth somewhat rubbed, darkened and faintly discoloured, spine and board edges faded, spine ends chafed with some fraying and minor loss, corners bruised and lightly chafed, page edges and endpapers darkened and foxed. Front free endpaper cracking at gutter but still firmly attached. Small (postage-stamp sized)Theosophical Book Concern bookseller's label on front pastedown, owner's inkstamp on title page and on front blank which also has a small chip at the upper corner, pages toned but clean.
