Do What Thou Wilt: A Life of Aleister Crowley [ Advance Uncorrected Proof copy ].

New York, NY: St. Martin's Press, 2000. First edition. Softcover. Large octavo. x + 470pp. Light grey printed wrappers, epilogue, endnotes, bibliography. An advance uncorrected proof copy of this "exploration into the life and works of a modern mystic, occultist, poet, mountaineer, and bisexual adventurer known to his contemporaries as 'the Great Beast'." Although largely overshadowed by Richard Kaczynski's "Perdurabo" and other more recent works, this remains one of the most interesting and well written biographies of "The Beast." This copy from the collection of Clive Harper with his discreet book-label neatly tipped in at the rear. Clive Harper (along with your humble cataloguer) are both listed in the Acknowledgements to the book. Harper is well- known as the bibliographer of Austin Osman Spare, for updating the Aleister Crowley bibliography in the 2011 Teitan Press collection of Gerald Yorke's writings, and as someone who has lent his expertise to numerous other publications. Loosely inserted is a postcard advertisement for a Manhattan bowling alley with a photo of two lingerie clad female bowlers on the front and a brief handwritten SIGNED message to Harper from author Sutin on the reverse. Covers a bit rubbed and creased from use (as one would expect), pages edges a little thumbed, no markings to text. Overall tight, unmarked Good + copy. Most unusual and with an interesting association. Item #69131
