The Encyclopedia of Religion ( Complete 8 Volume Set ).

New York: MacMillan Library Reference USA / Simon & Schuster MacMillan, (1995). Fourth Printing. Hardcovers. Eight Volumes. Quartos (11 1/4 x 9 inches). Sixteen volumes (complete) in eight. Over 8,000 pages in all with Volume 16 comprising an index to all other volumes. Black faux leather with gilt titling to and decorations to spine and front cover. The work was seen by many as the crowning achievement of of the life of its Editor in Chief, Mirceau Eliade (1907 – 1986), the Romanion born writer, philosopher, historian, scholar of religions and Sewell L. Avery Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History of Religions at the University of Chicago Divinity School. "The Encyclopedia of Religions" was first published as a 16-volume set in 1987, less than a year after Eliade's death, and soon went through a number of reprintings, which - like this set - reduced the number of volumes from 16 to 8, even though the content remained the same (they were not abridged, they simply doubled the number of pages in each volume.) "The Encyclopedia" is an extraordinary work - idiosyncratic and not without it's shortcomings - but still arguably one of the greatest references on comparative religion and mythology ever compiled. Top edges dusty, a hint of shelf-wear, short black felt-tip marks on the bottom edges of the text blocks (inidicating that the set was once sold new at reduced price). Still overall a lovely, tight, clean, near-Fine set (no dust jackets issued). A large and quite heavy set thus additional shipping to that automatically quoted will apply - please enquire listing your destination if interested and we can quote the cost to you. Item #69222
