The first major Tibetan work on medicine to be translated into English. It comprises a Preface and two major Parts. The first Part contains an Introduction by Marianne Winder, Keeper of Oriental Manuscripts at the Wellcome Institute in London; a History of Tibetan Medicine from various sources; two chapters from the medical text "rGyud-bzhi", an ancient Sanskrit medical work that survives only in Tibetan and Mongolian translations; a Bibliography of European Works of Tibetan; and Illustrations. The second part is a translation of the biography of the gYu-thog Yon-tan mGon-po, the famous physician and lama who is generally thought to have flourished in the twelfth century (CE). Head of spine lightly bumped and cloth a little darkened in places, edges of text block a little darkened, endpaper show a hint of pale foxing. Otherwise a tight, clean, VG+ copy in VG dust jacket (the largely-white jacket is a little darkened and shows traces of pale foxing, a few tiny chips and tears at edges, now protected by removable mylar sleeve).
