Fire Worship in Britain; New Knowledge Series ( No.4 )

London: Watts & Co., 1931. First Edition. Softcover. Large octavo. 48pp. Textured brown stapled wrappers, b&w illustrations, bibliography, references. A brief history of the worship of fire in early Britain including festivals and "fire gods". Written from what is now sometimes termed the hyperdiffusionist view of prehistory, which traces the origins of many traditional practices across the world, to ideas that came from Egypt or in some cases from Asia. From the publisher's note: "Dr. Dexter, following the lead of Professor G. Elliot Smith, Professor Sir Arthur Keith, Mr W. J. Perry, the late Dr. Rivers and other scientists, is of opinion that this culture was introduced into parts of these islands by "Easterners" (some probably Egyptians), who were here searching for pearls and gold (to them sacred things) as early as 2000 B.C. Later, other "Easterners" came for tin to harder their copper and convert it into bronze." Covers lighty rubbed and a bit darkened, pages toned but unmarked. A tight, clean VG copy. Item #69298
