Original light brown boards lettered in black on spine & front board, b&w frontisportrait, b&w and colour illustrations, index. A volume compiled from Besant's lectures and writings by Mrs. Stevenson-Howell in 1924 with the intention of setting forth in compact form Dr. Besant's presentation of the "Great Purpose of Life". Dr. Annie Besant (1847–1933) was a prominent British socialist, Theosophist, women's rights activist, prolific writer and powerful orator, who became the president of the Theosophical Society from 1907 to 1933, and the legal guardian of Jiddu Krishnamurti, controversial "World Teacher". Cloth rubbed, and darkened particularly at spine, some spot soiling, page edges darkened. Endpapers unevenly browned, owner's name etc on front blank, pages toned and colour plates have a rust stain from a paper clip at the top. Overall a tight, and serviceable Good + copy of a scarce title.(no dust jacket). Item #69334
