The Phenomenon of the Soul; [ "Voice of Inayat" series ].

Southampton UK: Sufi Publication Society [ Book Depot for Sufi Literature ], ND [ 1919 ]. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. 60pp. Original textured brown with gilt titling and illustration on upper board, b&w frontisportrait and illustrations. Imprint label pasted onto title-page reading "Book Depot for Sufi Literature / 54, Above Bar, / Southampton, England." A volume from the "Voice of Inayat" series compiled by Sherifa Lucy Goodenough, a follower of Khan for many years. In this work Goodenough attempts to present summaries of his teachings, drawn from the many lectures by Khan she had attended. Hazrat Inayat Khan (1882 –1927) founder of The Sufi Order in the West in 1914 (London) and a teacher of Universal Sufism who wrote extensively on the subject of Sufism for Western readers. Some of the titles given on the list of "Recent Sufi Publications" pasted on p. (v) suggest that although this is a first edition, it is a later issue, as the books listed were published after 1919. Heavily bumped at base of spine effecting the lower inside corner of the text block as well as the boards. Light overall shelf wear, spine a bit canted, page edges darkened, yellow endpapers unevenly browned, some light pencil underlining to text and the original reader has also noted the reading date lightly in pencil at the upper edge of each page (easily erased with patience!). Despite having been read this is still a tight clean Good + copy. No dust jacket - probably none called for. Quite scarce. Item #69603
