A Dictionary of Symbols.

New York, NY: Philosophical Library, 1962. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. liv + 420 pp. Pale blue cloth lettered in black on spine, b&w illustrations, bibliography, index. An encyclopediatic dictionary of symbols by Juan Eduardo Cirlot Laporta (1916 – 1973) a Spanish poet, art critic, mythographer, and musician. Although largely intended as a reference to elucidate symbols found in the arts, it is broad enough in scope to apply to all fields of knowledge and has much of importance on symbols derived from occult, religious and mythological sources. Spine ends and points lightly bruised, boards darkened, edges of text block flecked, endpapers toned, previous owner's name on front free endpaper. Well used but still a tight, unmarked about VG copy in somewhat shabby G+ dust jacket. (Dust jacket darkened, head of spine chipped and with a tear across the middle, edges and folds rubbed and chipped with a few short tears; now protected by a removable mylar sleeve). Item #69629
