Warminster, England: E. J. W. Gibb Memorial Trust, 1990. Reprints. Hardcovers. 6 volumes in 3. Octavos. Original black publisher's cloth, gilt title, etc to spine. Vol. 2: xxiv + 420 pp; Vol. 4 xvi + 496 pp, Vol. 6 xiv + 530pp. A complete set of THE TRANSLATION ONLY of the monumental Nicholson edition of the "Mathnawi" ("Masnavi") - one of the most influential works of Islamic mysticism - by the celebrated Persian Sufi poet Jalal al-Din Muhammad Balkhi (also known as Rumi). The Nicholson edition was the first complete translation of the "Mathnawí" into English, and is drawn from the oldest known manuscripts. The translator, R. A. Nicholson (1868 – 1945), was a scholar of both Islamic literature and mysticism and is widely regarded as one of the greatest scholars and translators of Rumi. This reprint edition was issued in six volumes, but many people did not bother buying the volumes that had the text in the original language. Thus the volume numbers appear somewhat eccentric, the translation being Volumes 2, 4, & 6, whilst those in the original text (not present) were Volumes 1, 3 & 5. To be clear - this set contains all the translations and notes by Nicholson, but not the original Persian etc. texts. Corners of Vol. 2 slightly bumped, edges of text block of all three vols. slightly darkened, otherwise a tight, bright clean VG+ set in VG+ dust jackets (the dust jackets are just a little darkened as is almost inevitable, being largely white, and have one or two small faint marks, but are otherwise Fine).
