Large octavo, xii + 546 pp. Original green cloth, gilt title, etc. to spine, illustration blind stamped to upper board, 240 b&w illustrations, index. Basically a totally revised and greatly extended version of the texts that could be found in Budge's "Gods of the Egyptians." The work comprises an Introduction "The early Egyptologists and the Egyptian Religion" followed by two main parts: Part I is a study of the nature and development of Egyptian religious beliefs, their foundation in magic, etc. etc.; Part II comprises a selection of new translations of hymns, myths, rituals, legends and so on; then there is an essay "The Dramatic Aspects of Certain Egyptian Myths" by Sidney Smith, and a further large section on "Legends of the Gods." Moderate shelfwear and and a couple of scrapes to front board, head of spine lightly bruised, owner's name on front pastedown, edges of text-block darkened and a little flecked. A little pale foxing to the endpapers, and just a touch of very pale foxing scattered throughout (hardly noticeable). Otherwise a tight, clean better than VG copy. (no dust jacket). Item #69660
