London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co. Ltd., 1909. Second revised and enlarged edition. Hardcovers. Three volume set. Small octavos. Consecutively paginated. (ccviii) + 1 - 78pp. & (xvi) 79 - 406pp. & (x) 407 - 698pp. (+ xxxvipp index). Magnificent fold-out color plate as frontispiece to each volume. B&w illustrations. All three volumes bound in original brown series cloth with black titling to spine, black title and border to upper boards. These are the VI, VIIth and VIIIth books in Budge's "Books on Egypt and Chaldea" series, and are uniformly bound thus. All volumes in the series were published separately but each is either complete within itself or, as in this case, as a sub-group. Thus Vols. VI, VII, & VIII offered here, are the complete three volume set which contains Budge's famous translation of the Theban recension of "The Book of the Dead." They were originally published in this form (with new translations, etc) in 1898. This 1909 edition is a revised and enlarged second edition of that work, with new material including a subtantially rewritten Preface by Budge. Bindings evenly darkened with a few flecks and marks, some corners bumped, and a couple of small bumps to the edges. Edges of text blocks darkened, and there is a tide-mark from a liquid splash to the fore-edge of Vol. I, but this does not affect the margins at all. Bookseller's labels on rear pastedowns. A dozen or two pages in Vol. I have some light pencil marks - ticks, crosses etc - which could be erased with a little patience. Pages toned. Overall a tight, clean, VG or better set of an attractive and important edition. Item #69662
