The Phoenix. An Illustrated Review of Occultism. 1931-1932 edition.

Los Angeles: Hall Publishing Co., 1932. First Edition. Hardcover. Folio. (15 3/4 x 11 inches). Blue cloth spine with lighter blue papered boards with orange titling and design, the surrounds of which have been painted with black ink (?) B&w illustrations throughout. Facsimile author's note printed on frontispiece. Edition limited to 3,000 hand numbered copies, this being copy No. 7. A gathering of essays on occult and spiritual subjects. Includes: 'The Ladder of Souls,' with diagrams after Robert Fludd; 'Bodhidharma, Patriarch of Zen; ' 'When the Dead Come Back,' 'Albert Pike, Plato of Freemasonry,' 'Sorcery of Asia, ' 'Concentration and Retrospection, ' 'The Comte de St. Germain, ' 'The Cycle of Transmigration,'(according to Nagarjuna), 'The Tenth Avatar, ' (a study of Gandhi) 'The Wheel of Pythagoras, ' 'The Practice of Meditation, ' 'H.P.B., the Russian Sphinx, ' (on Madame Blavatsky); 'The Universe in Stone,' (the Buddhist temples at Borobudur), 'Kismet' (a story), 'Holy Men, ' (of India), 'Apollonius, The Anti-Christ,' and 'The Great Pyramid.' Generously illustrated. Spine ends bruised and a little frayed, corners of boards rounded and rubbed through, both boards darkened - particularly towards edges - with some bumps and chips to paper covering at edges (particularly at fore-edge). A much used copy. A previous owner has painted the paper covers black, carefully avoiding the titling and phoenix design on the front cover. That is itself now heavily rubbed, and the corners of the boards are rubbed through. Corners bumped, causing a ripple to the corners of the text book. Endpapers hinges cracked but holding, and the endpapers have brown offset from old tape repairs on them. There is a large, intriguing apparently hand-done and coloured occult diagram tipped onto the front pastedown. A cut down flyer advertising a lecture given by Hall in 1956 on the rear pastedown. Some spotting (ink?) to title page and frontis, somewhat shaken, occasional small chips, marginal tears etc. throughout. This is one of those books that you wish you knew the history of - it has obviously been heavily used and personalised with the diagram, leaflet, and repainting of the boards. A fair to good but interesting copy priced in accordance with its condition (no dust jacket issued). Item #69671
