'"Illustrated Holiday Edition" Frontispiece and four full-page steel engravings, each with printed tissue guard. Top-edge gilt, front and bottom edges untrimmed. Title page in red and black. An attractive late nineteenth century edition of "A Strange Story," one of Lytton's most famous novels, in which an evil character seeks eternal life through the practice of black magic. Aleister Crowley is known to have had a more than passing familiarity with the book, and recommended it to students as well as referring to it a number of times in his diaries and elsewhere. Spine quite darkened, points of boards a little rubbed and bruised, a little light rubbing to cloth. Pages evenly toned. Overall a tight, clean VG+ copy (no dust jacket issued). Item #69861
