The Adept of Galilee, A Story and an Argument.

The Adept of Galilee, A Story and an Argument.

London: George Routledge And Sons Limited, 1920. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. viii + 434 pp. Blue cloth with gilt titling to spine, blind-stamped design to front board. The author, Cyril Meir Scott (1879 – 1970), was an English composer, writer, and poet who perhaps was best known for his three volume "Initiate" series which tells the story of “Justin Moreward Haig” an initiate or adept of high attainment along Theosophical lines. This is the stated first US edition of this work which is a sequel to "An Outline of Modern Occultism." In that work he explored "modern" paths of occultism, including those of Steiner, Spiritualism and Theosophy, as well as the beliefs that underpin them. Of this work, which was went to press shortly after the first publication of the first volume of the "Initate" series ("The Initiate: Some Impressions of a Great Soul", 1920) the author wrote: "The following pages seek to draw attention to the ancient and exalted Science of Yoga, as also to interpret the life and works of the immortal Nazarene in the light of that misunderstood, and in many ways occult, Science. That the attempt is not altogether a new one, the author jo}dully admits, seeing that both Edward Schure and Dr. Franz Hartman have already represented Jesus the Christ as a high Initiate of Occult Wisdom. But, unfortunately, both these writers failed to prelude their respective interpretations by any attempt to convince their public as to the rationale of Occult Science itself an omission which the present author has endeavoured to remedy. Moreover, it may be added, that in the subsequent story, Jesus is represented as a great Adept in Yoga, rather than as an Initiate exclusively trained in the Egyptian Schools of White Magic." Spine darkened, some modest bumping to head and tail of spine, edges and corners. A little general shelf-wear, edges of text block a little darkened and with a few small indentations to the fore-edge. Still overall a tight, clean, VG+ copy of a scarce book (lacks dust jacket).
