Harmonics, or the Philosophy of Musical Sounds .

New York: Da Capo Press, 1966. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Octavo. (xii) + xvi; 292pp (+xiipp index & corrections), Faux leather spine and paper cover boards, gilt design to front cover, titling to spine. Tables (some fold-out). A facsimile reprint of the first edition, originally published at Cambridge in 1745, of this curious work on harmonics. With an extensive historical Introduction by J. Murray Barbour. The author, Robert Smith (1689 – 1768) was an English mathematician, astronomer and music theorist; and Master of Trinity College, Cambridge. Smith helped to spread Isaac Newton's ideas in Europe and according to the "Oxford Dictionary of National Biography", "Newton's successes in optics and mechanics dominated Smith's scientific career". Smith's work on harmonics was largely overlooked at the time, however, his work is now seen as an extraordinary foretaste of theoretical developments that would not gain influence and be experimentally confirmed for over a century. A little light shelfwear, corners bruised, "Da Capo Press" stamp on rear free endpaper. Internally bright, tight, and clean. Overall VG+ in a VG or better dust jacket (the dust jacket is quite rubbed, particularly at the edges and folds, and has some chips and fraying along the top edge. Now protected by a removable mylar sleeve). Item #69864
