The Myths of Plato.

The Myths of Plato.

London: MacMillan and Co., 1905. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. iv + 482pp. Dark green cloth with gilt lettering to spine, index. The first edition of this important collection of myths assembled from the works of Plato, and first translated into English, and published by Professor J. A. Stewart in 1905. Professor Stewart's "The Myths of Plato" was the first work to "assemble the myths from the various Platonic dialogues, and to treat them as so many aspects of a consistent system of thought. His point of view, though open to religious overtones, was primarily poetic." Includes a chapter on Atlantis. This first edition also includes the original Greek text of the Myths positioned adjacent to the English text, a feature that was omitted from some later editions. Bumps to corners and edges of boards, cloth a little discolored, a little fraying to the cloth at the top of the spine, recent owner's bookplate on front paste-down, earlier (1925) owner's name and other details neatly on the half-title page. A number of leaves unopened, a little light creasing to some pages, a few very faint pencil annotations. Overall a tight, clean, VG or beter copy (believe no dust jacket issued). Item #69870
