Madras, India: Ganesh & Co., 1958. Sixth Edition. Hardcover. Small thick quarto. xvii + 530pp + vi + approximately 120pp of Sanskrit text & index. Publisher's bright red cloth with black titling to spine and upper board; serpent/solar design on upper cover, color frontispiece & plates, b&w illustrations. An important edition of one of the most well known of the works by Sir John Woodroffe (1865-1936). As well as including the prefaces, corrections, additions etc. to the earlier editions this sixth edition also has an added transliteration of all the Sanskrit verses and English-language indexes half-verses, authors, citations, words, etc. Since its original publication in 1918 "The Serpent Power" has been a standard, if technical, introduction to tantric, shaktic, and kundalini yoga. Woodroffe, who also used the pseudonym Arthur Avalon, was a leading jurist who devoted much of his free time to the study of Sanskrit and Hindu religion, in particular tantrism, and was largely responsible for its introduction to the English speaking West. Very light signs of handling, corners and spine ends bruised and light chafed, pages lightly toned but fresh and unmarked, a few creased edges and corners. A little shaken but overall in unusually good & solid shape for such a heavy volume. Clean and unmarked VG+ copy in about VG illustrated dust jacket (Dust jacket lightly rubbed overall, edges quite creased with some chafing and chipping, a few closed tears.
