Eliphas Levi and the French Occult Revival.

London: Rider & Co., 1975. Second Impression. Softcover. Octavo. 238pp. Printed glossy card covers. B&w Illustrations, select bibliography, index. Appendix on Aleister Crowley. A serious study of the life and work of Eliphas Levi (Alphonse Louis Constant: 1810 – 1875), one of the most significant figures of the nineteenth century occult revival. He was the author of a number of important – and entertaining – books on magic, and is perhaps best remembered as being the first to publicly identify the 22 Cards of the Major Arcana of the Tarot with the 'pathways' on the Kabbalistic "Tree of Life." It is perhaps some indication of his stature that no less a person than Aleister Crowley claimed to be both his reincarnation and occult successor. Cloth a little faded at margins, edges of text block dusty and lightly marked, pages toned but bright and unmarked. A little light shelfwear and fading to the covers, overall a tight, clean VG+ copy.
