Original brown cloth with blind stamped decorations to boards and spine and gilt titling to spine. Brown endpapers. Frontispiece & eighteen other woodcut plates, nearly 200 figures in text. The author, Thomas Inman (1820-1876), was a British doctor and mythologist who also wrote "Ancient Faiths Embodied in Ancient Names" and several other well-known works. Inman was strongly influenced by the work of Godfrey Higgins, in particular his theories on the phallic elements of religion, and an interest in phallicism pervades his works, including his "Ancient Pagan and Modern Christian Symbolism", an exploration of the symbolic links between Christianity and the ancient cultures of India, the Middle East, and elsewhere.
