This three volume set - complete within itself - was here presented as a part of a broad-ranging series of "Anglo-Saxon" classics published under the imprint of the Norroena Society. As the title indicates, this set of 3 volumes covers the Gods and Goddesses of the Northland. The author, Abraham Viktor Rydberg (1828 – 1895), was a Swedish writer and member of the Swedish Academy who was generally regarded as one of the greats of Swedish literature. He was profoundly interested in Norse and Teutonic mythology and history, and aside from broader works like the present set (originally publised as "Undersökningar i germanisk mythologi") he wrote a number of thoughtful and sometimes controversial specialist studies which are held by some as having ushered in a new age of serious Eddic scholarship by both overturning many of the the then-prevailing misconceptions about the Eddas and their relationship to other myths. The translator and editor, Rasmus Bjørn Anderson (1846 – 1936), was a significant individual in his own right: an American of Nordic descent, his own works were instrumental in popularising the discovery that Viking explorers were the first Europeans to arrive in the New World. Spines a little dulled, bit of light shelfwear, merest hint of bruising and rubbing to spine ends and corners, light chafing to lower edges of boards, pages lightly toned but unmarked, a personal bookplate on the front pastedown of each volume. The interiors are clean and unmarked. Overall a lovely VG+ set (no dust jackets - probably none issued). A large heavy set which will require increased shipping to that automatically quoted, price dependent upon the destination. Item #70323
