Spiritualism and Theosophy, Scientifically Examined and Carefully Described.

Madras, India: Theosophical Publishing House, 1928. First Edition. Hardcover Octavo. 256pp. Blue cloth spine over matching papered boards, navy titling to spine and upper cover. A very uncommon first edition of this study by Charles Webster Leadbeater (1854-1934) the prominent, if controversial, member of the Theosophical Society, co-founder of the Liberal Catholic Church, and author of many books on Theosophy and various aspects of occultism. Chapter Titles: Spiritualistic Phenomena; Personal Experiences; Utilization of the Medium's Body; Clairvoyance in Spiritualism; Some Recent Test Cases; Partial Materialization; The Manipulation Of Psychic Rods; Miscellaneous Phenomena; Visible Materialization; Some Recent Materialization Phenomena; Our Attitude Toward Spiritualism. Light rubbing and a few faint marks from handling to covers, spine ends and corners bumped and lightly creased. The book is printed on very thin paper, which is extremely easily torn, and probably explains the scarcity of this edition. The edges of the text-block have been roughly trimmed / opened and are a bit ragged, there is a two inch split at the bottom inner margin of the title leaf, the first four leaves have very neat old repairs to some horizontal tears (the tears appear to be done with Japanese tissue or something similar). Overall a tight, unmarked VG or better copy (no dust jacket if called for). Scarce First edition. Was $85-. Item #70331
