The Book of Dreams and Ghosts.

London: Longmans, Green & Co., 1897. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. xviii + 302pp. (+ 32pp. publisher's catalogue at rear). Blue decorative cloth with gilt title & black design on spine, art nouveau illustration in black & grey on upper board. B/w vignette on title-page. Top-edge-gilt. A beautiful copy of this reasoned, good-humoured collection of supernatural lore by Andrew Lang (1844 – 1912) which is sometimes described as one of the first serious studies of ghost-lore. Chapter headings under which the various accounts are gathered include: Dreams; Visions; Crystal Visions; Hallucinations; Wraiths; Ghosts; More Ghosts with a Purpose; Ghosts; Ghosts and Hauntings; Modern Hauntings; Hauntings; Old Ghosts; Icelandic Ghosts; Mixed Bogies. Lang was of course the well-known and pioneering Scottish anthropologist and folklorist and historian who is best remembered for his "rainbow" serires of books on myth and fairy tales. A hint of rubbing to the cloth at the points and front fold, otherwise the cloth is remarkably bright and clean. The text is printed on cheaply produced paper, which is heavily toned, as always, and has a faint musty odour. Two small chips and tears to fore-edge margins of 23/24 & 25/26, now with small, archival tissue tear to versos of each page. Overall a tight, clean, VG copy in unusually good condition (no dust jacket issued). Item #70369
