Item #70456 "Torture Through the Ages" a poster advertising an exhibition of torture implements etc held on the Isle of Man. Torture.

"Torture Through the Ages" a poster advertising an exhibition of torture implements etc held on the Isle of Man.

Castleton, Isle of Man: A.I.T., ND (circa 1970s). An original 17 1/2 x 8 inch poster, printed in red and black on thick paper, with a reproduction of a mediaeval-style woodcut depicting various torments and torture at the top. The text reads "Torture Through the Ages. A.T.L Present a Sensational Exhibition of Torture Past and Present-Day. The Exhibition consists of material drawn from the Amazing Private A.T.L. Nuremburg Collection, and never before exhibited to the public. You have travelled far, so while on the Island be Sure to Visit The A.T.L. Torture Exhibition. Onchan Head. Adults Only - Open 10a.m. to 11pm. [Printer's imprint:] Castleton Press." Unfortunately we have been unable to find out anything about this poster, other than that it almost certainly dates from the mid-1970s. Onchan Head is in the Isle of Man, but it seems unlikely that there is any connection with Gardner's Witchcraft Museum as the iteration on the Isle of Man closed permanently a few years before this poster seems to have been produced. The "A.T.L. Nuremburg Collection" is equally mysterious, but it may have been a name invented by artist Robert Lenkiewicz (see other listings in this catalogue) for part of his collection of strange artefacts. The poster has two holes punched in the upper margin through which a string tie is looped. This appears to be original to it, although we cannot say with certainty. The blank back of the poster is somewhat age-stained and marked, but curiously - and fortunately - this has had virtually no effect on the front which aside from being a little darkened is otherwise unblemished. Thus VG+ condition - where it counts. The poster will be sent rolled in a poster tube. Please note that it cannot be sent media mail so please select the priority mail option. Additional shipping may be requested dependent on destination. Item #70456
