Transcendental Magic: Its Doctrine and Ritual.

London: William Rider & Son, Ltd., 1923. Revised Edition. Hardcover. Large Octavo. xxxvi + 522pp [+ iipp adverts] Original dark red cloth. Upper cover decorated in gilt with an ornamental design incorporating six hexagrams, framed by two sets of double rules. Lettered on upper cover and spine in gilt. Top edge gilt, bottom and fore-edges untrimmed. Frontispiece portrait and seven full page black and white plates, various engravings in text. The extensively revised 1923 edition of Waite's translation of Levi's "Transcendental Magic." Dr. R. A. Gilbert observes that Waite had been unable to provide a fully annotated translation of the text in his original publication of the work in 1896, but did so for this edition: "The annotations are extensive, for Waite had worked on them sporadically for seven years." [Gilbert B18(c)] Includes all original engravings and a portrait of the Author. Cloth a little darkened, head and tail of spine and two corners very lightly bruised. Neatly written contemporary owner's magical name / motto "Jacendus" (?) and small triangle within triangle sigil and year 1923 written on front free endpaper. A few light pencil marks towards the end of the book (these would be easily erased but it would be a shame to do so - especially if further research proved "Jacendus" to be an individual of particular interest) . A little very pale foxing to the first and last few leaves, otherwise internally tight, bright and clean. An attractive, unmarked, VG+ copy of an increasingly scarce work, particularly in such lovely condition (no dust jacket). Item #70520
