Verus Jesuitarum Libellus.

Calgary, Canada: Octavia & Co. Press, ND [ 2005 ]. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Octavo. 36pp. Maroon papered spine over black papered boards. Full length title label with printed design tipped to front board (as issued by publisher). A notorious text - generally assumed to be a forgery - that is supposed to reveal the black magic rites of the Jesuit order of the Catholic Church. While it most likely had nothing to do with the Jesuits, it is clearly a genuine magical work parts of which are clearly identifiable as having been drawn from other older grimoires. A sort of secondary title-page reads "Verus Jesuitarum Libellus, or, The True Magical Work of the Jesuits; containing most powerful charges and conjurations for all Evil Spirits of whatever State-Condition or office they are And a Most powerful and approved Conjuration of the Spirit Usiel To which is added Cyprians Invocation of Angels And his Conjuration of the Spirits Guarding hidden treasure - together with a form for their dismissal. Paris 1508. Translated from the Latin by Herbert Irwin - 1875." The work has circulated in various manuscript and clandestinely published forms for several centuries. This edition gives no hint as to the provenance of the text, but with a few exceptions it largely follows the the text of the first section of the eponymous manuscript held in the Cleveland Public Library collection, and it may be that it has been transcribed from that. Although undated the previous owner fortunately made a pencil note indicating that he purchased it from the publishers new in April 2005, most likely shortly after it came out. Genuinely rare. We have been unable to find any reference to this specific edition at all. It clearly had a tiny print-run. As new - Fine condition. No dust jacket issued. Item #70584
