A Medieval Illuminated vellum Manuscript Leaf from a Book of Hours. Probably produced by a female scribe in the Convent of St Agnes, Delft. Circa 1450.

[ Delft, The Netherlands ]: ( circa 1450 ). A single manuscript leaf: text on both sides of a 6 7/8 x 4 7/8 inch sheet of clean white vellum, the written surface being approximately 3 5/8 x 2 1/2 inches. Written in old Dutch text in a clear Gothic Bookhand in red and black inks, with capitals in blue or red. Text capitals touched in red. Text written between 2 verticals and 22 horizontals ruled in grey. This manuscript leaf is an example of the superb work done in the scriptorium of the Augustinian convent of the canonesses of St. Agnes in Delft. The convent ran a scriptorium from the second quarter of the 15th century, whose manuscripts with distinctive red and blue pen-work were highly regarded. By the late 15th century they had begun adding an increasing numbers of finely executed illuminations, flourishes, decorations and miniatures, and some of these works are now considered to be masterpieces of the illuminator’s art. This particular text contains prayers from the Hours of Eternal Wisdom. VG+ condition. Mounted between two sheets of glass, in a double-sided 10.75 inch x 8.75 inch black wooden frame. The frame has a little light wear, but is overall VG + condition.
