Item #70971 A Handwritten and Drawn Astrological Natal Chart, for Emily Cordelia Sutherland Prepared by Aleister Crowley. Aleister CROWLEY.

A Handwritten and Drawn Astrological Natal Chart, for Emily Cordelia Sutherland Prepared by Aleister Crowley.

NP, 1943. A single sheet of 8 x 6 inch thick (mould-made?) white note-paper with the O.T.O. "Udjat-eye, dove and chalice" lamen printed in red at the head of the page. On it a neatly drawn holograph natal chart for Emily Cordelia Sutherland née Landers, born 03-May-1897 (married John J. Sutherland in 1926). Comprising a grid drawn in blue crayon, and astrological symbols etc. in black ink in Crowley's handwriting on the recto (the verso is blank). Sutherland was for many years the housekeeper, secretary and general factotum of Evan Morgan, later 4th Baron, 2nd Viscount Tredegar (1893 – 1949), a poet and noted eccentric who had a life long involvement with the occult and who Crowley knew quite well. According to Richard Kaczynski in "Perdurabo" Crowley became acquainted with Sutherland whilst staying at Tredegar's home, in South Wales in June 1943. "Being released when Tredegar sold his country home, she began a long correspondence with AC, occasionally sending powdered chocolate and plover's eggs his way." Crowley references Sutherland in his diary for Saturday June 19th, the third day of his stay with Tredegar, and specifically records her birth date. Given that Crowley was in the habit of drawing up people's charts shortly after he met them, it was almost certainly around then that he would have prepared Sutherland's chart. Further references in Crowley's diary suggest that they met several times in London, and she attended a party that he held, and there seems to be a hint at least that he was hoping for more than a casual friendship. The document is guaranteed genuine (as are all items sold by us) and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. There is a light crease across the centre from having been folded, and a rust mark from a paper-clip at the head of page (more visible on verso). Otherwise bright, clean, and in VG+ condition.
