VII Sermones ad Mortuos. The Seven Sermons to the Dead written by Basilides in Alexandria the City Where the East Toucheth the West.
London: Stuart & Watkins, 1967. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Tall slim octavo. 34pp. Original bright orange buckram (cloth), gilt titling to spine and a facsimile of Jung's signature gilt stamped on upper cover. A collection of seven mystical or "Gnostic" texts written in the guise of the second century gnostic Basilides of Alexandria and originally privately published by Jung in 1916. From the publisher of this edition: "Dr. Jung, in his autobiography "Memories, Dreams, and Reflections", speaks of a period in his life when he was experiencing a series of visions and fantasies, an important period in that from these experiences stemmed all the creative work which he accomplished in later years. It was during this phase of his development that "Septem Sermones ad Mortuos" came into being. Its writing was accompanied by strange phenomena and, as Jung says: 'Then it began to flow out of me and in the course of three evenings the thing was written. As soon as I took up the pen, the whole ghostly assemblage evaporated. The room quietened and the atmosphere cleared. The haunting was over.'" A hint of shelf wear, light half-inch dent to upper quadrant of front cover, light vertical crease to front free endpaper. Otherwise a lovely VG+ copy in VG dust jacket. (Dust jacket has general shelf wear, a few scrapes and snags to panels, and some small chips and short tears to the edges. Now in removable protective mylar cover). Item #71109
