This work revolves around the personal grimoire of William Dawson Bellhouse 1814-1870), titled by him "A Complete System of Magic." Bellhouse was a mid-nineteenth century British polymath: a practitioner of various medical therapies (most famously Galvanism - the therapeutic use of electricity), an astrologer, retailer, something of a rogue and charlatan, yet also a sincere cunning man, a practitioner of magic, folk charms and remedies. His "Complete System of Magic" includes healing spells, love charms, spells to protect a building from evil, to repel witchcraft (including measures making use of "witch bottles"), the detection of criminals using wax images, short discourses on the magical properties and uses of snakesin and vervain, the preparation of planetary talismans etc. Bellhouse's manuscript is accompanied by several explanatory texts by Dan Harms, and actual examples of the materials that Bellhouse would have used in his rituals. The contents of the boxed set are: (1) "A Complete System of Magic" - a complete transcription of the magical manuscript by William Dawson Bellhouse, 200pp, illustrations; (2) "William Dawson Bellhouse, Galvinist, Cunning Man, Scoundrel" a biography of by Bellhouse by Dan Harms, 29pp, illustrations; (3) "Witch Bottles, Steel & Glass" by Dan Harms. A short work exploring the background of the related practices in the manuscript. 52pp, illustrations; (4) "Wax Images, Voodoo Dolls, Figurines, Mannikins & Poppets" by Dan Harms. Describing the context and history of those particular type of practices as referenced in the manuscript, 60pp, illustrations; (5) A folder entitled "Liverpool Mercury" which contains (a) a large format sheet with reproductions of 12 contemporary newspaper articles relating to Bellhouse and his circle; (b) facsimiles of the original manuscript - in 2 parts - by Bellhouse; (c) a large folded sheet with nicely printed limitation statement on one side, and the instructions for opening a "secret chamber" at the rear of the box on the other. To open the instructions it is necessary to break a wax seal bearing the imprint of the Society of Esoteric Endeavour. Hidden in the chamber are items related to the actual practices described: (1) A small round skrying glass; (2) A small egg-shaped skrying glass (3) a small cylindrical skrying glass; (4) the "three bonds": paper diagrams printed with names of power, upon which which the skrying glasses are placed; (5) A metal ring upon which the oval and round glass can be placed (6) Beeswax for making wax images (7) Vervain Leaves (referenced in manuscript); (8) Vervain Root (referenced in manuscript) (9) Naturally shed wild snakeskin (referenced in manuscript). "AS NEW" SET. As the secret chamber is unopened the photographs of the contents that accompany this listing are those originally supplied by publisher. Those of the externals were taken by us. Overall Fine condition. Exactly as received from the publisher. The hand-made natural cloth binding shows a few minor irregularities. Please note - this is a large heavy set, so additional shipping will apply. Also, due to the hidden compartment, and its contents, there seems a good chance that the work will be stopped and inspected by customs if shipped internationally, which could easily result in damage. For this reason we will not ship outside the United States. Item #71474
