Simon Iff, the Unpublished Stories.

NP: Privately printed [ LULU.com ], 2009. POD - First Edition. Softcover. Pocket sized - small octavo. 582pp. Glossy card covers. Notes and sources. Text is divided into three parts: Simon Iff in America; Simon Iff Abroad; and Simon Iff, Psychoanalyst. The (unstated) first printing of this uncommon selection of Crowley's "Simon Iff" stories. It appears to include all the Simon Iff Stories not published in "The Scrutinies of Simon Iff," (1987), which is presumably where the "unpublished" in the title comes from. From the publisher: "This volume brings together two series of short fiction by the poet, writer and religious philosopher Aleister Crowley (1875-1947). It includes the first complete publication of Simple Simon, the detective series featuring Crowley's most memorable fictional creation, the mystic-magician-philosopher-psychoanalyst-detective Simon Iff. The idealised Crowley in old age, Simon Iff is wise, knowing and unfailingly humorous as he applied psychoanalysis, Taoism and his own religious philosophy of Thelema to divine the depths of human nature and solve a wide array of crimes and mysteries. The six Scrutinies of Simon Iff stories are set in France and England, anchored by Iff's beloved Hemlock Club. The twelve Simon Iff in America stories afford Crowley's penetrating insights into America as he found it during his residence from 1914 to 1919. His three Simon Iff Abroad stories take the reader to tribal North Africa, inaccessible Central Africa and to the high seas. The two Simon Iff Psychoanalyst stories were among the earliest tales to use the new science of psychoanalysis to solve mysteries. Also included is Crowley's other major short fiction series, the eight stories of his legendary Golden Twigs, which were inspired by Sir J.G. Frazer's encyclopedic study of myth and religion in history, The Golden Bough." The volume predated by 3 years the release of "The Simon Iff Stories & Other Works" (2012, edited by William Breeze) which is surely the definitive edition. Nontheless this is an important, interesting, and scarce edition. From the collection of Clive Harper with his discreet book-label neatly tipped in at the rear. Harper is well- known as the bibliographer of Austin Osman Spare, for updating the Aleister Crowley bibliography in the 2011 Teitan Press collection of Gerald Yorke's writings, and as someone who has lent his expertise to numerous other publications. Very light signs of shelf wear else a tight, clean as-new Fine copy. Item #71985
