London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co. Ltd., ND [ 1920 ]. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Quarto. 104pp. Maroon cloth with gilt title and author to spine, blind rules to boards. Twenty-two full-page b&w plates printed on coated. Probably the best known of the sixteenth century alchemical manuscripts. This edition reproduces in black and white the plates of the magnificent British Museum manuscript. The "J.K." who edited etc. the work was almost certainly the enigmatic Julius Kohn (1850 - 1925?). Kohn was a Theosophist and alchemical enthusiast who is said to have had a superb library of alchemical books and manuscripts. He was a friend of W. A. Ayton, who with Percy Bullock, were members of the original Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn known for their great interest in alchemy. Scholars like Dr. R. A. Gilbert have conjectured that it was Kohn who provided the translations of alchemical works that were commissioned by Lord Stafford, which later form the basis of a number of A. E. Waite's publications, such as the "The Hermetic Museum" (1893). Cloth shows modest shelf-wear with a few small faded spots. Spine ends lightly bumped and chafed, and spine lightly faded. Corner's of boards quite heavily bumped, head and tail of spine bruised and a little rubbed. Previous owner's book-plate on front pastedown, some pale brown streaks on half-title page (see photo), pale spots to a few pages, otherwise pages lightly toned but clean and unmarked. Overall a tight, clean VG+ copy of this important edition (no dust jacket). Item #72223
