The Healing of Rodolphe Grivel. Congenital Deaf Mute.

New York, NY: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1927. First English language edition. Hardcover. Large octavo. xiv + 274pp. Original navy cloth with gilt title, etc. to spine, gilt and blue device to upper board, top edge gilt, frontis w/ tissue guard. The first English language edition of this work that first appeared in French in 1811 under the title "Guerison de Rodolphe Grivel, sourd-muet de naissance, Notions sur Le Sens de l'Ouie". D'Olivet, orientalist and philosopher, claimed that the principles of all the sciences were to be found in a work called "The Cosmogony of Moses," which he translated and published in his "The Hebraic Tongue Restored." To prove his assertion he set up a course of treatments for a deaf-mute of fifteen based on the teachings it held. D'Olivet claimed that he restored the faculties of hearing and speech to the teenager, and describes the story of the cure and the method in this volume. Spine ends and corners lightly rubbed with a tiny bit of fraying at lower spine, fixed endpapers cracked at hinges - but hinges quite sound, text clean and bright. Overall a sound VG+ copy.
