Essay on the Eleusinian Mysteries [ Essay on the Mysteries of Eleusis ].

London: Rodwell and Martin, 1817. Hardcover. Octavo. xvi + 188pp. Modern quarter leather, deep red leather spine with gilt lettered spine label, gilt rules and embellishments in blind, marbled papered boards & fresh endpapers, speckled page edges, fold-out frontis, 2 b&w plates. An attractive example of the first English language edition (taken from the revised 3rd French edition of 1816) of this well known study of the Eleusinian mysteries. The author, M[onsieur]. Ouvaroff, was Sergei Semenovich Uvarov / Sergey Uvarov (1786–1855), a Russian classical scholar who is most widely remembered both for his authorship of this book, and as an influential statesman in the court of Nicholas I of Russia. Curiously the J. Christie who provided the "observations" in the volume was James Christie (1773 - 1831), son of the founder of the famous eponymous auction house, and a significant antiquary and classical scholar in his own right.
Very light shelf wear, page edges darkened, first and least leaves are a little darkend, and with a little pale foxing. Tiny single-line translation of a quote from Homer on the title-page, text pages bright and unmarked. Overall an attractive and clean VG+ copy. Item #9878
