Vol. I: 88pp & Vol. II: 96pp. Original beige cloth with elaborate bird/floral illustration to upper boards, pictorial end papers, frontispiece, illustrated title page and in text illustrations in colour by Sanchi O. Gawa, floral page borders. While not published together this set has matching bindings. A collection of Japanese fairy-tales / children's stories retold for Western children. First Series, includes: The Wonderful Teakettle; The Wood-cutter's Sake; The Mirror of Matsuyama; The Eight-headed Serpent; The Stolen Charm; Urashima; The Tongue-cut Sparrow; and Shippeitaro. Second Series - The First Rabbits; Lord Bag of Rice; Peach Darling; The Old Man with a Wart; The Eighty-One Brothers; The Bamboo Cutter's Daughter etc... A bit of general shelf wear to both volumes, cloth a little rubbed, darkened & discoloured, spines darkened with some dulling to spine lettering, endpapers unevenly browned, pages lightly thumbed, a few creased corners. Front endpapers of Vol. I split at cracked at inner front hinge - but hinge holding well. Overall a tight, unmarked VG set (no dust jackets). Unusual in matched set. Item #32280
