The Books of the Beast. Essays on Aleister Crowley, Montague Summers, Francis Barrett and others.

London: Mandrake, 1991. Second edition, Revised and enlarged. Softcover. Octavo. 128pp. illustrations. Frontis. Notes and index. The Second revised and enlarged Edition of this delightful collection of bibliographically orientated essays. The book is worth having for the essay on Crowley alone, but each of the others is similarly entertaining and instructive, and the author's little autobiographical Epilogue an absolute treasure. Loosely enclosed is a whimsical typed SIGNED note on letterhead from the author to Nicholas Bishop-Culpeper ordering a copy of one of his own books, "Alembic", which Nicholas then had for sale. Also a printed "purchase order" from Tim's (then) bookselling company requesting copies of Nicholas' edition of Crowley's limericks. From the collection of English bibliophile and Aleister Crowley scholar Nicholas Bishop-Culpeper with his ownership signature pencilled at the top of the title-page. Covers a bit rubbed at edges, corners and spine ends. Page edges a little darkened and thumbed, otherwise an unmarked VG+ copy. A wonderful association copy, linking two great British Crowley bibliophiles. Item #39799
