The author Stuart Cumberland (1857-1922) gained considerable renown as a mentalist (mind-reader and possessor of telepathic skills), but was an avowed critic of mediums and psychics who he believed for the most part to be frauds and shysters. In this work he explores many of the practices of well known mediums, exposing the methods they used to fool their audiences, and tries to engender a more critical attitude in the public. From the collection of Dr. M. H. Coleman, with his ex-libris seal blind-stamped on the front free endpaper. Cloth lightly rubbed, minor fading to spine, corners and spine ends lightly bumped and chafed, top-edge lightly browned, endpapers unevenly browned.
